Global Information Flows: Contested Cultural Norms: Beyond geopolitics, activism, and development, information is also a contested resource when it comes to cultural production. Why do some cultural products succeed from going local to international and global, whilst others are unable to reach their desired audiences and can only remain competitive at the grassroots? How do cultural producers and actors, ranging from filmmakers to celebrities and artists, engage with global information system to their advantage and how do they redefine this system as a result of their products? In this research strand, we introduce such fascinating research as that on Chinese and Indian global film industry, celebrity activists and development, and the appropriation of American cultural products in authoritarian contexts like Russia, China, and Iran.
